How to Backpack Across the UK
As a highly accessible country with a diverse range of landscapes, plenty of interesting history, and a moderate climate, touring the UK is a popular option for any traveller. Plus with no dangerous wildlife or particularly challenging terrains, it’s a safe option, too.
If you are thinking of backpacking across the country, there are a few things you should keep in mind. So, here are a few of our top tips for backpacking across the UK.
1. Consider the Timing of Your Trip
While British weather is unpredictable, some months are still better than others. Any time between May and September is a good time to go as you will benefit from longer daylight and (hopefully) some sun. Just bear in mind that in between late July and early September, it is the school holidays, meaning many places will be considerably busier and more expensive, so it’s best to travel outside of these times if possible.
2. Pack For All Eventualities
As we mentioned, weather in the UK can be hard to predict, so packing can be tricky. Although you can be sure that there is almost always a good chance of rain.
Always pack rain-appropriate clothing like waterproof coats and trousers and remember to layer up, as it can switch from freezing to mild at any time. It’s also important to pack comfortable walking shoes, as one of the best things to do in the UK is go for a long walk in the vast countryside - finishing with a pint in the pub of course.
3. Think About Your Transportation
While the UK is relatively well connected and getting around the country by train or coach is a solid option, it can get quite expensive. Trains are the fastest way to get around but they are costly, and while coaches are much more affordable, they are considerably slower.
A good middle ground is to rent a car. It’s faster than a coach but cheaper than a train, plus it gives you much more freedom. If you’re worried about being too young or you’re an inexperienced driver, there are still options - consider looking into car rentals for new drivers.
4. Plan Your Route Carefully
The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and each country is more than worth a visit. But you might want to consider starting at one end and finishing at the other instead of jumping around between the north and the south. This will save you a lot of time and money, plus you’ll be able to experience each country’s unique culture one after the other!
Get Packing!
Once you have worked out when you want to go, how you want to get around, and where you want to start, it’s time to get packing! Just remember that the UK has a variety of landscapes and the weather can change at any time, so packing properly and being prepared for all eventualities is essential. When done right, backpacking across the UK is a truly memorable experience.
