Switzerland's Most Scenic Train Journeys: From Lucerne to Montreux
Switzerland is one of those destinations where the journey can be just as memorable as the places you visit. With snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, charming villages and spectacular Alpine valleys, it offers some of Europe's most beautiful scenery, much of which can be enjoyed from the comfort of a train.
What makes Switzerland particularly special is its remarkable railway network. Rather than simply connecting cities, many routes have become attractions in their own right, taking passengers through landscapes that would otherwise be difficult to experience.
For travellers considering Switzerland rail holidays, two journeys stand out for their scenery and the wonderful destinations they connect: the GoldenPass Express and the Lucerne–Interlaken Express.
The GoldenPass Express: A Journey Through the Swiss Alps
Few railway journeys capture the beauty of Switzerland quite like the GoldenPass Express.
Travelling between Interlaken and Montreux, this panoramic train takes passengers through some of the country's most picturesque landscapes, from Alpine valleys and traditional villages to the shores of Lake Geneva.
One of the most memorable aspects of the journey is how dramatically the scenery changes. Departing from Interlaken, you'll travel through the beautiful Bernese Oberland, surrounded by mountains and green countryside.
As the train approaches Montreux, the landscape gradually opens up to reveal Lake Geneva and the vineyards that line its shores.
The train itself is designed to make the most of these views, with large panoramic windows providing an excellent perspective of the surrounding scenery.
For anyone who enjoys combining spectacular landscapes with comfortable travel, it's a journey well worth including in a Swiss itinerary.
The Lucerne–Interlaken Express: Lakes, Mountains and Villages
Another of Switzerland's most scenic routes is the Lucerne-Interlaken Express, connecting two of the country's most popular destinations.
The journey takes approximately two hours, but it feels much more like a sightseeing experience than an ordinary train ride.
Leaving Lucerne, the route passes through beautiful countryside, alongside lakes and into the mountains of central Switzerland. Highlights include the striking turquoise waters of Lake Lungern and the dramatic scenery surrounding the Brünig Pass.
The train eventually descends towards Interlaken, a town perfectly positioned between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
Unlike some of Switzerland's more famous panoramic services, this route doesn't require a special panoramic train reservation, making it an accessible addition to a wider itinerary.
It's a wonderful introduction to Swiss rail travel, particularly for visitors experiencing the country's landscapes for the first time.
Discover the Charm of Lucerne
Lucerne is one of my favourite places to begin a Swiss rail adventure.
Situated beside Lake Lucerne and surrounded by mountains, the city combines beautiful scenery with an attractive historic centre.
Its famous Chapel Bridge is one of Switzerland's most recognisable landmarks, while the waterfront offers wonderful views towards the surrounding peaks.
Lucerne is also an excellent base for exploring nearby mountains, including Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, both of which can be reached using combinations of trains, mountain railways and other local transport.
Spending a couple of nights here before continuing towards Interlaken allows you to experience more than just the railway journey itself.
Interlaken: The Heart of the Bernese Oberland
Interlaken is another destination that deserves more than a brief stop.
Nestled between two beautiful lakes and surrounded by the Bernese Alps, it's an ideal base for exploring some of Switzerland's most spectacular mountain scenery.
From here, travellers can visit destinations such as Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, both renowned for their dramatic landscapes.
Lauterbrunnen is particularly memorable, with towering cliffs and waterfalls creating one of the most distinctive valleys in the Alps.
Interlaken also serves as the connection between the Lucerne–Interlaken route and the GoldenPass journey towards Montreux, making it a natural centrepiece for a scenic rail itinerary.
Finish Your Journey in Montreux
After travelling through the mountains, arriving in Montreux feels like entering another side of Switzerland.
Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, the town enjoys a beautiful lakeside setting, with elegant buildings, mountain views and a relaxed atmosphere.
A walk along the waterfront is one of the simplest pleasures here, particularly on a clear day when the mountains are reflected in the lake.
Nearby Chillon Castle is another highlight, standing on a rocky island beside the water.
Montreux is also well connected to other destinations around Lake Geneva, making it an excellent place to extend your holiday.
When Is the Best Time to Experience These Routes?
One of the great things about Switzerland's scenic railways is that they offer something different throughout the year.
Spring and summer bring green valleys, colourful wildflowers and clear lake views, while autumn transforms the countryside with golden colours.
Winter offers a completely different experience, particularly when snow settles across the Alpine landscape.
Both routes operate throughout the year, although checking seasonal timetables and planning connections in advance is always worthwhile.
Experience Switzerland One Scenic Journey at a Time
Switzerland's railways offer much more than a convenient way to travel between destinations. They provide an opportunity to experience the country's extraordinary landscapes without the distractions of driving or navigating unfamiliar roads.
Combining Lucerne, Interlaken and Montreux creates a particularly memorable itinerary, bringing together historic towns, beautiful lakes and some of the most impressive mountain scenery in Europe.
For me, that's the real appeal of travelling through Switzerland by train. Every journey reveals something new, and the views outside the window are often just as rewarding as the destination waiting at the end.
