Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur: Hotels and Hideaways for Every Traveller
Amari Kuala Lumpur: Contemporary Comfort and Standout Service
During our stay, Amari Kuala Lumpur exceeded every expectation. Modern, bright and brilliantly located, it’s ideal for couples and families alike. What stood out most was the genuinely warm service , we felt welcomed from the moment we arrived, and the team were fantastic with the kids.
The hotel is located in KL Eco City and is particularly close to the Mid Valley Mega Mall.
You can reach the mall via. a covered walkway from the hotel. This route takes you over the Klang River. Take a moment here to stop and look out for Monitor Lizards swimming along the river or on the banks of the river. We saw lots every time we took this route! We didnt expect to be wildlife spotting in the heart of a city!
If your budget allows, upgrade to a Club Room. The rooms are spacious and stylish, and the extra privileges, including lounge access, add a touch of luxury that’s well worth the treat. Cocktails and canapes in the early eveningis the perfect way to relax. We also had live music which was lovely. The lounge had a great atmosphere. After a busy day, the pool is a refreshing oasis, and the hotel’s connection to public transport makes getting around effortless.
Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur: Boutique Chic With a Rooftop Pool
Set in the creative Jalan Kamunting district, Hotel Stripes blends industrial design with heritage influences. Each floor nods to a different era of KL’s past, creating a boutique feel with real character. The rooftop pool and bar are dreamy at sunset, and the location is perfect for exploring both the old and new sides of the city.
Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur: Calm Oasis in the City Centre
Synonymous with excellent service, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur is an urban sanctuary set amongst lush gardens just a short walk from the city’s most iconic sights. Expect five star dining (don’t miss the legendary breakfast buffet), elegant spa treatments, and a level of care that makes every stay feel personal. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere, a beautiful pool, and impressive kids’ facilities.
Serviced Apartments: Central Comfort and Space for Families
Travelling with family, a group of friends, or planning a longer stay? Kuala Lumpur’s serviced apartments provide the perfect blend of space, value, and home from home comfort. Properties in Bukit Bintang, KLCC, and Bangsar put you close to public transport, malls, and parks. Expect full kitchens, laundry facilities, and pools - ideal for recharging after a busy day. We stayed at Star City Apartments and also had access to a great gym, a small play area and an onsite restaurant. We were within 5 minutes of the Petronas Towers which was great.
We stayed in Star Apartments in KLCC - This was one of our pools. We had also had one on the roof.
Tip: Many serviced apartments are attached to hotels, meaning access to onsite facilities and concierge service. It’s a great way to enjoy flexibility while still feeling pampered.
Eating Your Way Around Kuala Lumpur: A Feast for the Senses
No guide to Kuala Lumpur is complete without diving into its culinary melting pot, where every meal is an adventure and every alleyway holds a new discovery. Malay, Chinese, and Indian flavours come alive in iconic restaurants, humble hawker stalls, and bustling food streets.
Jalan Alor Food Street: A Night-Time Foodie Adventure
We visited Jalan Alor Food Street, and it’s every bit as lively as travellers describe - a whirlwind of neon lights, lanterns overhead, sizzling woks filling the air with spice and rows of stalls competing for your attention. Pull up a plastic chair, sample char kuey teow (fried rice noodles), satay skewers, smoky grilled fish, and don’t forget mango sticky rice for dessert. It’s chaotic, colourful, and utterly unmissable.
Word of warning: Malaysia loves durian — the ultra pungent fruit you’ll smell everywhere. Luckily for sensitive noses (ours included!), it’s banned on public transport and in lifts!
My tip would be to walk to the length of the street to check out whats available before deciding.
Brickfields (Little India): Home of the Perfect Curry
Head to Brickfields for a riot of colours, aromas and South Indian flavours. Think crispy dosa dipped in fragrant sambar, buttery naans, and coconut laden curries. Discover open air eateries serving banana leaf rice and cardamom tea. This is the spot for a leisurely lunch or relaxed evening meal, surrounded by bustling market life and Hindu temples.
Petaling Street (Chinatown): Noodles, Dim Sum, and Heritage Vibes
Guan Di Temple, Chinatown
Petaling Street pulses with energy day and night. From quick bowls of Hokkien mee (dark, saucy noodles) to delicate har gow prawn dumplings, Chinatown delivers big on taste and atmosphere. Seek out hidden coffee shops serving hand-pulled kopi, barter for souvenirs, and take in the decorative arches and lanterns that celebrate KL’s Chinese community.
Modern KL Eats: Global Dining and Hidden Gems
Beyond the classics, Kuala Lumpur’s dining scene blends global influences with local ingredients. Contemporary hotspots in KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Bangsar serve everything from sushi and Lebanese to innovative fusion. Treat yourself to a rooftop brunch or explore Instagram-famous bakeries for a sweet Malaysian treat.
Tip: Food courts inside major malls (such as Suria KLCC or Pavilion) offer a treasure trove of Malay, Peranakan, Thai and international flavours—ideal for families and foodie explorers.
What to Do in Kuala Lumpur: Must-See Attractions and Local Experiences
KL has a dual personality: ancient tradition runs alongside futuristic ambition, making it a joy to explore. Here’s how to make the most of your time in the city.
PETRONAS Twin Towers: Kuala Lumpur’s Iconic Skyline
Soaring 451 metres above the city, the PETRONAS Twin Towers are Malaysia’s most recognisable landmark. Walk the Skybridge suspended between the towers, or ascend to the observation deck for a bird’s eye view of KL’s skyline.
Tickets are limited and often sell out, so book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Don’t miss the impressive PETRONAS Lake Symphony light and music show. This takes place on the lake outside the towers, which is just outside Suria KLCC shopping centre. This draws locals and visitors to the base of the towers every evening. It is well worth planning a trip.
KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur): Views With a Twist
For a jaw-dropping perspective that includes the Twin Towers, head to KL Tower. Brave the open-air Sky Box or enjoy dinner in the revolving restaurant as the city comes to life below. The base of the tower also houses a small rainforest, perfect for a midday stroll.
Batu Caves: Temples, Rainbow Steps and Adventure
Just a short Grab or taxi ride from central Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. This lively spot combines colourful temples, dramatic caves, and a healthy dose of local adventure — making it perfect for families, couples or solo explorers.
You’ll know you’ve arrived when you spot the enormous golden statue of Lord Murugan towering over the entrance. The real highlight is the famous staircase: 272 steps, each painted in cheerful colours, leading up to the caves. Along the way, cheeky monkeys dart about (keep your snacks and sunglasses close!), and you’ll pass local devotees climbing to the shrines above.
At the top, the main cave (known as Temple Cave) opens up like a natural cathedral. You’ll find peaceful shrines, colourful murals, and the sound of prayers echoing in the cool, shaded space. If you visit during the vibrant Thaipusam festival (usually Jan/Feb), the entire area comes alive with crowds, music and celebrations.
For something a bit different, opt for a guided tour of the Dark Cave. This section is great for nature lovers — you’ll learn about cave wildlife and ancient rock formations as you explore by torchlight. Energetic visitors can also try rock climbing in the area, with options for complete beginners as well.
Afterwards, recharge at the nearby Selayang Hot Springs. These open-air pools are popular with locals, and offer a simple, relaxing soak that’s great for easing tired legs after all those stairs!
Top Tips:
- Wear good walking shoes and bring water — the climb is steep but worth it.
- Dress modestly out of respect for the temples (cover shoulders and knees).
- Don’t feed the monkeys, no matter how cute they look!
Chinatown: Stalls, Temples and Urban Exploration
Wander through Chinatown for eclectic shops, traditional temples, and a smorgasbord of street food. Sri Mahamariamman Temple, KL’s oldest Hindu temple, and Guan Di Temple, a beautiful Taoist shrine, offer peaceful respites from the street’s bustle. It’s the sort of neighbourhood best discovered on foot, camera in hand.
Sepang Circuit F1 Tour: For the Motorsport Fan
Just a short drive from central Kuala Lumpur and right next to KLIA, Sepang International Circuit is an unmissable stop for motorsport fans visiting Malaysia. While the track no longer hosts Formula 1, it remains a vibrant venue for MotoGP and other major racing events. We thoroughly enjoyed our guided behind-the-scenes tour, which offered an inside look at the podium, grandstands, and exclusive race facilities—our kids especially loved re-enacting the podium celebrations. The guide’s passion for the circuit’s history really brought the experience to life, although it’s clear that the venue has lost some of the polish from its F1 days.
Despite this, Sepang is still an excellent recommendation for Formula 1 enthusiasts and anyone interested in motorsport history. If you have the chance, try to visit on a track day to soak up the atmosphere and witness the action. For more tips on planning your visit, check out our full Sepang guide.
Parkrun Kuala Lumpur: Kickstart Your Weekend with a Local Running Experience
For active travellers seeking a unique and social start to their Saturday, Parkrun Kuala Lumpur is a brilliant way to experience the city like a local. Held in picturesque parks throughout KL, these free, 5km community runs are open to visitors and locals alike, offering a warm welcome and a chance to see Kuala Lumpur’s green spaces from a fresh perspective.
Back home in the UK, our eldest had just started joining Park Runs every weekend, so when we spotted one happening in KL, we couldn’t resist checking it out! Rising early to find our way, we joined the growing crowd of runners as the city slowly woke up. The signature Parkrun atmosphere was instantly familiar: friendly faces, encouraging volunteers, and a genuine sense of camaraderie among all participants, no matter where they came from.
Parkrun in Kuala Lumpur is the perfect blend of exercise, sightseeing, and local connection—all wrapped up before breakfast. Whether you’re keen to keep up your running routine or want to enjoy a uniquely local experience, joining a Parkrun is a rewarding way to start your day

KLCC Park: Playground Paradise with Skyscraper Views
KLCC Park is a green oasis at the feet of the PETRONAS Towers, featuring sprawling playgrounds, shaded paths, and splash fountains. There’s space for picnics, jogging, or simply unwinding while the kids play with a dramatic city backdrop.
Aquaria KLCC: Deep Dive Into Underwater Wonders
Escape the midday sun and venture into the world-class Aquaria KLCC, where walk-through tunnels reveal gliding sharks, rays, and sea turtles. Engaging and educational, it’s a must-do for marine-loving families.
