It’s understandable that most visitors make a beeline for the pyramids when they’re holiday in in Egypt. After all, they’re a captivating sight and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

However, while these monuments are definitely one for the bucket list, there’s so much more to experience on a trip to this stunning country. If you’re planning a getaway, here are some of the must-do activities on holiday in Egypt.

Indulge in Red Sea activities

The Red Sea offers clear waters, making it one of the best spots for underwater adventures. In Hurghada, you can book an afternoon of parasailing over the turquoise water or hop on a jet ski and zip along the coastline.

For a bit of playful fun, banana boat rides are everywhere and usually end in a refreshing splash. Prefer wind in your face and a bit more edge? Dahab is the place for windsurfing. Conditions here are ideal, especially for those with some experience under their belt.

To escape the daytime crowds, arrange a boat trip to one of the more remote reefs. Operators often include lunch and snorkelling gear, and the guides know exactly where to find the best visibility and calmest seas.

Explore Siwa Oasis

If you want to travel off the beaten path, Siwa Oasis rewards you with a serene desert experience. Tucked near the Libyan border and well away from the well-trodden routes of Cairo and Luxor, Siwa is a tranquil spot with salt lakes so dense they rival the Dead Sea – bring a book for that iconic photo.

Visit in early summer, before July's heat reaches its peak. At this time, the oasis is warm but manageable, and the light creates stunning reflections across the salt pans. Once you’ve had your fill of floating, soak in a natural hot spring or take a mud bath rich in minerals.

Also, take a trip to the Temple of the Oracle, where Alexander the Great once sought guidance and enjoy walking or cycling around the palm-lined paths of Siwa for a slow-paced adventure.

Seasonal sunset Nile cruises

As the sun begins to dip, the Nile transforms into a ribbon of golden light. On your Egypt holiday, book a boat and glide along the river. From Luxor, your boat might pass the vast Karnak Temple complex, where towering columns still cast shadows over the water.

In Aswan, drift by colourful Nubian villages, where the clay houses glow in soft hues during the golden hour.

Remember to be ready to take some photos. Sunsets along the river are truly beautiful and create frame-worthy shots.

Egypt in summer offers more than just sunshine. Plan your itinerary, pack wisely, stay hydrated, and let curiosity lead the way.
