Oliver’s Thoughts on Our Big Family Adventure: Learning, Laughing, and Memories
At 13 years old, Oliver is taking a thoughtful approach to our upcoming year-long family adventure. Standing tall at 6’1” and a rugby enthusiast, he’s excited to explore the world while reflecting on the unique experiences this journey will bring. Here’s what Oliver shared about our big adventure, in his own words.
Learning Together, but Differently
“I think that learning on the road will be a different experience to being in school because my sisters and I will be learning together, but we will all be learning different things because we are different ages, so it will feel weird,” Oliver explains.
One of the exciting aspects of this trip is the holistic approach we’ll take to learning. For example, visiting a temple isn’t just about admiring its beauty—it’s an opportunity to engage in different ways. Oliver might calculate the square footage, while Savannah and Maddie could measure its length or explore its design. As a family, we’ll research its history, read stories about its significance, write reflections, and dive into the geography of its location. This tailored approach ensures that learning becomes an immersive, hands-on experience that caters to each child’s interests and abilities.
The Joy of Funny Moments
“I am hoping that we have funny moments along the way, and I am sure that Maddie will be scared of some sort of animal at some point,” he predicts with a grin.
Humor is an essential part of family travel, and Oliver knows that Maddie’s reactions to creepy crawlies or unexpected encounters are bound to keep us laughing. These lighthearted moments will be cherished as much as the monumental ones.
Saying Goodbye to Sunshine and Stunning Views
“When we get home, we will miss the sunshine, and this will be quite an upsetting moment,” Oliver shares. “But what I’ll miss most when we get home is probably the views, the sunsets.”
For Oliver, it’s clear that the natural beauty we’ll experience during our travels will leave a lasting impression. From golden beaches to mountain horizons, he’s already bracing himself for the bittersweet feeling of returning home.
A Treasure Chest of Memories
“I will always have my memories, though,” Oliver reflects.
This statement captures the heart of why we’re embarking on this adventure. Beyond the destinations, this journey is about creating a lifetime of memories—moments we’ll revisit again and again, through stories, photos, and shared experiences. The holistic learning we’re embracing ensures that these memories aren’t just about sights seen but about knowledge gained and connections strengthened.
A Dad’s Reflection on Oliver’s Thoughts
As Oliver’s dad, his reflections show a level of maturity and insight that makes me proud. His awareness of how we’ll learn and grow differently, his sense of humor about Maddie, and his appreciation for nature’s beauty all highlight what a thoughtful young man he’s becoming.
The holistic approach to learning that we’re taking will help Oliver develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of the world. Whether he’s calculating, observing, or reflecting, each moment will contribute to his growth. I’m excited to see him thrive, gain confidence, and deepen his connection with his sisters and us as a family.
Oliver’s thoughtful approach to our adventure is a reminder of how unique this experience will be for each of us. Follow along with us on WanderLearn as we explore the world through the eyes of every family member, from the youngest to the tallest!
