Mini Series: Maddie’s Thoughts Before Our Big Family Adventure and World Travel
Before we dive into the travel plans, I wanted to share something a bit different. This mini series of blogs is all about our kids and their feelings as we prepare for our big family travel adventure. We felt it was really important to document this — not just the fun and exciting parts, but the honest, sometimes tough emotions too. It’s a reminder, a humbling moment, and a grounder for all of us that while travel is amazing, it’s a huge change for the little people in our family.
So here’s Maddie’s voice, in her own words, about how she’s feeling before our big trip abroad.
Maddie’s Thoughts Before Our Big Family Adventure and World Travel
As our family gears up for an epic travel adventure around the world, Maddie has been sharing some of her sweetest, funniest, and most honest thoughts about what’s going through her mind. It turns out, there’s a lot to be excited about — but a few nerves, too!
When asked what she’s most excited about, Maddie didn’t hesitate: “Spending time with my family.” Honestly, that’s the best part of any family trip, right? No matter where we go, being together is what makes it special.
But Maddie’s also feeling a bit nervous — and who wouldn’t be? She told us she’s worried about “leaving my friends, leaving my teachers, I do not want to leave school.” That’s a big deal, especially when you love your school and your friends as much as she does. We totally get it — goodbye hugs and playtime aren’t easy to say farewell to.
Speaking of what she’ll miss, Maddie gave us a glimpse into her heart with a list of the things she’ll really miss while we’re away: “Hershey (our dog), my pretend baby, chips.” Chips? Absolutely essential, obviously. And Hershey? Definitely non-negotiable love there.
Looking ahead to the places we’ll visit, Maddie’s got some big dreams! She’s super excited about Cambodia and Australia, but also — surprise! — France made the list. (We haven’t told her yet we’re skipping France this time, but hey, a girl’s gotta dream, right?)
To make sure she feels happy and safe on the road, Maddie’s bringing along Bunny — her cuddly, trusty companion who’s basically family at this point. We wouldn’t leave home without Bunny, that’s for sure.
When we asked Maddie what she thinks will be the most different part of life while we’re travelling, she summed it up perfectly: “Fun, different, cool.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves. New places, new experiences, and definitely new adventures.
And speaking of adventures, Maddie told us exactly what would make the trip extra awesome for her: “Splashing water at my dad or jumping waves.” Well, that sounds like a recipe for some epic family memories — and a few wet shirts for Dad!
Before we set off, Maddie wanted to send a message to her friends back home: “I will miss you all and I will see you when we get back.” We know your friends will miss you too, Maddie, and we can’t wait for all the stories you’ll share when you reunite.
A Note from Andy — Parenting Through Big Family Adventures
Watching Maddie share her feelings has been a real reminder of how exciting—and a little scary—big changes can be for kids. As a parent, I’m proud of how open and brave she’s been. It’s perfectly okay to miss the people and places you love while being excited about what’s coming next.
This family trip isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about growing together, making memories, and embracing the joys and challenges of travel with kids. Maddie’s right: it’s going to be fun, different, and totally cool. And yes, there will be plenty of splashing water (sorry, Maddie, I’m definitely expecting some waves to get me soaked)!
We’re all in this together, Bunny included, and I know with that kind of spirit, our family adventure is going to be one for the books.
Here’s to new beginnings, laughter, and lots of chips on the road!
