The Lake District in Cumbira is a popular tourist spot, especially among nature lovers and adventure seekers. The National Park and World Heritage Site features 16 different bodies of water, all surrounded by dramatic landscapes and breathtaking scenery.

Taking a road trip around this awe-inspiring part of the country is a perfect way to experience the vast countryside, lakeside views and quaint villages.

To really make the most of your trip, it makes sense to put some time and effort into planning.

Research and itinerary

There are many delights in the Lake District and you’ll need to spend some time researching your must-visit locations.

You might want to experience popular highlights such as Windermere, Keswick or Wastwater, home to the deepest lake in England and home to the country’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike.

Alternatively, you might consider heading to some of the more undiscovered areas of the region such as Haweswater, Eskdale or Ennerdale Valley.

Your itinerary is important and it’s a good idea to identify the locations where you might want to spend a bit more time. Plan how long you want to stay in each area and devise a route based on your must-sees.

The right vehicle

The Lake District is renowned for its narrow roads and undulating terrain so it’s important to choose a reliable vehicle for your trip. Leeds offers multiple used car dealers, featuring a variety of vehicles depending on your preferences, should you wish to consider changing your car before your road trip.

Packing essentials

You’ll want to make sure you pack the essentials for your trip so you don’t get caught short. Depending on your activities, you’ll need waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear, navigation tools, water bottles and a torch.

You should ensure your car is equipped with an emergency kit which includes items such as a first aid kit, spare tyre, hi-vis vest, non-perishable food items, blankets and water.

If you’ll be doing lots of hiking, cycling or watersports, it’s a good idea to stock up on snacks for your adventures.

Accommodation and activities

The Lake District can get busy, especially during peak times such as school holidays and the summer months, so it’s wise to book accommodation in advance, especially in particularly touristy areas. There are a range of options to choose from including bed and breakfasts, cosy cottages, campsites and luxury lodges.

If there are any specific activities you want to experience, ensure you book these ahead of time too. These might include boat trips, guided walks or kayak or canoe lessons.

Restaurants and pubs often get booked up at weekends and during holidays so ensure you make any reservations well ahead of your trip.

While some aspects of a road trip can be unpredictable, such as the weather or traffic conditions, by planning ahead as much as possible you’ll be in the best position to make the most of your Lake District getaway.
