Getting your weekends organised already? Though it might not be the first UK city that springs to mind when you’re planning a few nights away, it’s most definitely one worth visiting.

From its cheery nightlife to its fantastic shopping centres and modern facilities, there’s something for everyone in Newcastle. Perhaps surprisingly, some of the most beautiful northern coastlines are just a stone’s throw from the city centre, too.

Eager to learn more? We’ve listed five of our favourite things about the Toon in this article.

Top 5 reasons to visit Newcastle for a weekend

  1. History

Newcastle might look modern at first glance, but don’t be fooled: this city is truly steeped in history. St. Nicholas Cathedral and Newcastle Castle fall amongst the most iconic landmarks, and you’ll find plenty of monuments on a tour of the city too.

The city’s cultural heritage stems from the printing industry, where in the eighteenth century, it was the fourth-biggest player across the UK. Just a few years later, Newcastle became a magnet for intellectuals. Where industry is concerned, the Toon was a keystone during the rise of coal, iron and steam: Newcastle was home to the world’s very first purpose-built locomotive works.

  1. Art

Any art enthusiast won’t be disappointed by the array of galleries, sculptures, and other delights in and around Newcastle. From subtle street art to towering galleries, there’s a wide variety to discover. For some of the most established and upcoming British talent, a visit to The Biscuit Factory is a brilliant idea.

The Angel of the North is instantly recognisable as one of the most important symbols of northern culture and heritage. It can be found in Gateshead, a key suburb of the big city just over two miles from the centre.

  1. Transport

The city is incredibly well-connected, especially for those who need to commute from the suburbs to the centre. In addition to local bus services, residents and tourists alike can use metro and train services to reach and get around Newcastle.

If you’re heading to Newcastle from further afield, you can make the most of frequent train services with easy connections from London and the Midlands. Don’t forget that it’s just as easy to reach surrounding towns and villages by public transport, including coastal hotspots like Tynemouth.

  1. Food

Newcastle has a brilliant food scene that won’t fail to leave any foodie feeling hungry for more. If you’re ready to eat your way around the city, it’s worth planning carefully and booking in advance, since the most exclusive spots can be booked up months in advance.

If you’re looking for fine dining and Michelin-rated restaurants in Newcastle, there’s enough choice to see you through one weekend and onto the next. Likewise, if pub grub is a little bit more up your street, you won’t be short of options. And if you’re headed to the chippy, don’t be surprised if you’re offered cheese or gravy on top!

  1. Nightlife

Lastly, no weekend in Newcastle would be complete without a visit to one of the countless bars in the city. Whether you’d prefer real ales or fancy cocktails, every tipple is catered for in the Toon.

Arguably the most glamorous parties can be found in the aptly named Diamond Strip, which runs along Collingwood Street almost all the way to Central Station. Expect upmarket, fancy venues that come alive once the night really gets going. For a contemporary night out packed with microbreweries and great chats with friends, we’d recommend Dean Street.
