Turismo Lanzarote has provided a destination update revealing signs of a promising winter holiday season ahead with air connectivity between the United Kingdom and Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Airlines such as British Airways, Jet2 and EasyJet have all increased weekly flight frequencies even compared to the 2019 winter season. The tourism body also revealed a number of new premium leisure experiences that have been introduced in a bid to attract quality tourism that sees the visitor immerse themselves in the destination and all that it has to offer.

ASOLAN, Lanzarote’s Hotel Association ,confirmed that 85% of the hotels on the island have reopened for the winter season, meaning that the sector has capacity to receive visitors from the UK and Ireland among other core international markets. Moreover, for the remaining months of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, travellers who stay in a regulated tourist accommodation will have access to complimentary Covid-19 insurance. The insurance policy sees beneficiaries receive coverage on medical expenses, medical repatriation, and extension of stay in the event of Covid-19 infection.

Air connectivity is another important factor when planning for a successful winter season. Restrictions on international travel continue to ease bringing with it an increased demand for flights to the island. In the 2019/2020 season there were 123 weekly flights from UK to Lanzarote while in the 2021/2022 season there are 164 per week. In fact, WizzAir announced a new winter route between Doncaster Sheffield and Lanzarote, just in time for the October half term. Likewise in the Irish market the connectivity with Lanzarote is promising. Both RyanAir and Aer Lingus are offering daily flights from Monday to Sunday from Dublin to Lanzarote while RyanAir also offers two flights per week between Shannon and Lanzarote.

New immersive destination experiences

Turismo Lanzarote also revealed plans to implement a new tourism strategy that sees the destination target premium leisure travellers that are interested in discovering an environmentally conscious destination with a series of new experiences in English. The new experiences include wine and gastronomy experiences during the winter months beyond ‘sun and beach’, experiences organised by Lanzarote’s Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, and an emphasis put on new luxury and boutique hotels. Such experiences include the Cactus Garden which invites visitors to discover Cesar Manrique’s legacy on the island and the exciting new Insolita Mountains experience which invites small groups to access areas that are usually closed off to visitors. Notable gastronomy experiences include the Jameos del Agua Night Experience which combines food and wine with the magic of the Jameos del Agua, a volcanic tunnel and caverns featuring an underground concert hall, restaurant and salt lake.

As the world slowly eases out of the pandemic and travellers are once again boarding planes, Lanzarote is forecasting a return to pre-pandemic levels in terms of visitor arrivals from the UK and Ireland thanks to  its capacity to receive visitors, the excellent air connectivity and a new strategy which sees the island attract quality tourism in the form of premium leisure experiences.
