Holiday News: Rick and Jill Stein unveil shepherds hits in Cornish countryside
The five new shepherd’s huts are located at The Cornish Arms, St Merryn - a short drive from Padstow
Following a busy summer holiday season, Rick Stein Restaurants is to unveil five cosy shepherd’s huts at The Cornish Arms, St Merryn, a short drive from Padstow. The huts – designed by Jill, Ed & Kate Stein - join the family-run business’ existing hotel rooms and self-catered holiday accommodation on the coast.
The location of the hand-built huts has been carefully chosen; home to sheltered woodlands on the grassy grounds of historic destination pub, The Cornish Arms. The wooden huts offer peaceful countryside accommodation within reach of Cornwall’s burgeoning food scene, beaches and scenic walking trails.
Designed by Ed Stein - an accomplished stonemason and artist - in collaboration with local experts in craft and design, the huts combine modern comfort with craftsmanship. Cornish stone has been used to create traditional curved stone hedges (surrounding each hut and offering privacy) as well as for individual terrace areas on which guests can relax and watch the sun rise and set over the valley each day.
Tongue and groove wooden planks form the huts’ homely and traditional English-style interiors, brightly lit by sunlight through large windows on all sides. Collaborators on the project include Martin Clemens, Cornish stonemason with over 35 years’ of experience in the trade, and Steve O’Hagan, responsible for groundworks and skilfully levelling the land on which the huts are positioned.
Each hut is home to a bright living and dining area, an en suite shower bathroom and kitchenette. Completed with boutique fixtures and fittings including gooseneck taps, Nespresso coffee machines, full-sized porcelain sinks and Robert’s ‘Revival’ Radios. The huts feature a double size bed looking out over the pasture beyond, all designed to comfortably accommodate two adults.
Soft furnishings and in-hut amenities are by Jill and Kate Stein, artfully chosen in keeping with the Cornish country and coastal setting. The interior designer and co-founder of the 1975 Rick Stein Restaurants has fitted the cabins, with all-natural skincare from her Porthdune range, offering guests a little luxury during their stay.
Guests can wake up to breakfast available at The Cornish Arms, opting for a full English or something a little lighter, all made using the finest local produce from nearby farmers, bakers and producers.
Dinner is also available at the pub – simple, British fare with Rick Stein flair as well as a wood-fired pizza served in the scenic beer garden.
For entertainment, the bounties of Cornwall are on guests’ doorsteps. The huts are ideally located to Padstow Harbour, nearby Harlyn Bay and ideal for exploring the picturesque Camel Trail.

“I am so proud to have worked on the design and construction of our shepherd’s huts, which felt like a natural addition to the valley and land surrounding The Cornish Arms. I’ve always thought of the space as an open canvas, and I’m pleased we’ve created a secluded set of huts from which guests can enjoy the beautiful scenery beyond. The huts are just perfect for couples who want to explore, set back from the hustle and bustle of the town. I worked on the extension of The Cornish Arms, and have tried to carry the feel of that design over into the huts too. The hut build was a great opportunity to bring together some of the most talented designers and craftspeople in Cornwall, and to build something (well five somethings!) which showcase that talent. We cannot wait to open and see plenty of happy faces enjoying the cabins and their charm.”
